I should have made this post a long time ago. I get questions about how to do this and that all the time. Typically my answer is “trial and error, because it all depends”. It is short and sweet but it doesn’t really help those who seek assistance. So I have decided to compile a list of internet links to the sites that I peruse to help me to advance my hobby. I’ll try to keep the list short and to the point. In no particular order:
Photography Techniques
Digital Photography Tips for Beginners (Digital Photography School)
Educational DVDs (PhotoVision.com)
Learn Photography: How to Take Photographs; Cameras, Lenses, Film (Photo.net)
How To Improve Your Photography (PhotoSercets.com)
Outdoor Photography Techniques (OutdoorPhotographer.com)
How to do Panoramas (Panorama.dk)
The ultimate guide to HDR photography (PhotoCritic.org)
HDR Tutorial with Examples (StuckInCustoms.com)
10 Pictures of Tokyo Gotham (PingMag.com; HDR techniques)
Equipment
Digital Photography Review
Lighting Kits by Westcott
Photography Review
Photography Communities
Club Foto (Russian)
Photo.net (all types of photography)
SportsShooter (sport photography)
DPhotoJournal (all types of photogrpahy)
This is a list of sites that I have used and continue to use to further the skills in photography. Obviously the list could go on and on and on. It is true when they say that there’s no substitute for reading… but in the end it all boils down to taking your camera, stepping outside, and taking pictures. The more you take the better you will become.
I must say a couple more things…
I have greatly benefited from working with Virginia Tech’s University Relations photographers Rick Griffiths and John McCormick, Roanoke Times’ photographers Gene Dalton and Matt Gentry, and Virginia Tech Athletics Senior Photography Coordinator Dave Knachel. They may not even remember me, but watching them at work has been, without a doubt, invaluable to my experience.
